Milky Way and a Red FlashlightWe were photographing the Milky Way in Badlands National Park and decided to see what would happen if we illuminated the foreground hill with a red flashlight.

Fractal LandscapeThis drone shot was taken just outside of Badlands National Park in South Dakota. You cannot fly a drone in a national park, but we found this terrain just outside of the park. I love the fractal look you get seeing the ravines from above.

Spirit of the Canyon - Upper Antelope Canyon light beam
Spirit of the Canyon - Upper Antelope Canyon light beamThis is a rare light beam that reaches all the way to the bottom of Upper Antelope Canyon.  The light beams only reach the bottom of the canyon during months when the sun is high in the sky.  Even then, light beams are only visible in certain areas and certain times, and only for a few minutes.Antelope Canyon is a slot canyon near the city of Page Arizona.  It is part of the Navajo Nation and can only be seen with Navajo guides.  It is very narrow and very deep.  Because of that, the only light the reaches some areas is the blue glow of the sky.  Other areas are lit by direct sunlight bouncing off the reddish brown sandstone.  The differing colors of light gives the canyon the appearance of waves of color. The canyons were formed by flash floods cutting through the sandstone.  Flash floods are still a concern.  Tourists have been killed by flash floods in Lower Antelope Canyon.  Since water from a very large area funnels into narrow canyons, even a small amount of rain can cause the canyons to fill with water in minutes.  The Navajo people carefully monitor the weather and close the canyons if there is any possibility of rain. There are two separate areas: Upper Antelope Canyon and Lower Antelope Canyon.  Upper Antelope Canyon is easier to get to and is all on one level so it is easy to walk through.  Consequently, it is more heavily visited.  Getting into Lower Antelope Canyon requires climbing down steep stairs.  Getting through the canyon requires climbing up and down various areas.  Some parts of the canyon are difficult to squeeze through.  As a result it is less heavily visited than Upper Antelope Canyon.I have pictures here from both Upper Antelope Canon and Lower Antelope Canyon.

Pink Dawn at Mono LakeThe white limestone pillars growing out of the lake are called tufas. The pink light of dawn colored everything pink including the tufas and the mountains behind them.

Pink Sunset at Mono Lake. The limestone pillars called tufas give Mono Lake an other-worldly appearance. They are caused by underground calcium springs flowing into the highly alkaline water of the lake.
